Second Day: Potato Curry with Naan

September 4, 2012
I like food because it unites people.

Not only does food unite ethnic groups, but it literally brings people together, because we all need to eat. This is part of the reason I'm cooking a lot these 1.5 weeks with Dad: to get my brother to come over for food so I have some company. Maybe I'll invite a different guest one night!

Speaking of community and food, I heard on the radio that astronauts living in space for months at a time requested a table at which to eat meals even though in zero-gravity tables are useless. Regardless, in order to feel like dignified human beings, they would rather struggle strapping food and kitchenware down to a table and eat in community rather than do it any other way.

Potato curry from the internet.
Rating: Good! Jeff agrees.
Comments: I just cooked about a gallon of garbanzo beans, so I'm trying to use them all. I'm glad we had garam masala so I could make this delicious Indian curry.

Vegan naan from the website.
Rating: Good!
Comments: This yeasted bread takes at least three hours total to make. Roll it very thin when you fry it. I used whole wheat bread flour.

My potato curry and naan.

The update for Dad is that he's doing fine and has not been a big pain. He was very uncomfortable when Kat was over on Sunday, though, and he kept getting up and coming into the kitchen where we were. Inevitably he sought food each time he came over, which was a big hassle. After Kat left he was back to normal.

In my effort to keep Dad busy, I am trying to come up with very tedious, never-ending tasks for him. Last night I had him organize and stack all the Scrabble tiles by letter. It took him at least 45 minutes and he was very focused.
